GREEN BAY, Wis., Oct. 21, 2002 -- The nation's largest-circulation newspaper group
debuted its first subscription-only website, a feature-packed offering devoted to fans of
the NFL's Green Bay Packers. Subscription, authentication and transaction billing for the
site is handled by Clickshare Service Corp.
"Packers Premium" (http://www.packersnews.com) offers discounted subscriptions at $29.95
yearly or $4.95 a month during a "sneak peak" preview period from now
until Nov. 3. Subscribing "cheese
heads" -- Packer fans -- are treated to exclusive columns by Coach Mike Sherman; video of
players and play diagrams; and pre-game and post-game analysis.
"We are combining our talent and expertise in covering the Packers and
placing it all on one Web site for fans to have easy access," said Ellen
Leifeld, Gannett Wisconsin's Group president and publisher. "I think fans
will really enjoy the stories and analysis."
"We developed Packers Premium to meet the demand of Packers fans throughout the
world who want more than what they can get with their hometown news coverage," said Green
Bay Press-Gazette Publisher Bill Nusbaum. "This site will have information that isn't
available anywhere else. It will delve into the positives and negatives about the team,
evaluate the team's performance and provide fans with an in-depth look at the coaches and
players."
Beginning Nov.4, fans can subscribe to Packers Premium for $5.95 a month or $34.95
annually. "This isn't just Packers coverage during the season," Nusbaum said. "The
off-season is just as important as game day, and fans will get complete stories of the
draft, spring training and player coverage throughout the year."
Gannett becomes the fourth news publisher to debut enhanced Internet services for
NFL fans using Clickshare Service Corp's customizable user-registration services, federated
(multi-site) authentication and subscription or per-item billing of digital-content
transactions. Both DallsNews.com and DenverPost.com offered NFL newsletters for the Cowboys
and Broncos in their 2001-2002 seasons. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune launched its premium
NFL Vikings website last month.
